This requirement applies only to students interested in teaching Spanish, French, or German.

Scope and goals

The proficiency test required for licensure in Spanish, French, and German is the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), which is meant to assess global speaking ability based on the ACTFL proficiency scale and guidelines.

Format

You have two options. One option is to take the OPI on the phone, where you'll have a live conversation with a trained OPI Tester. The other option is to take the computer version of the OPI, called the OPIc, which consists of a simulated conversation (i.e., you hear the prompt once, and the recording starts automatically).

For information about the OPI live, including what it is and how to schedule it, please visit this page.
