Field Experience & Student Teaching
Like all Teacher Education programs, field experience is at the core of the FLTE curriculum.
In preparation for initial licensure, teacher candidates undergo three Early Field Experiences (EFE) across the first two semesters in the Professional Education Sequence. As teacher candidates progress through EFE courses, they will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and acquire skills in lesson and unit planning, instructional methods, assessment/evaluation, and interacting with students and the greater school community in advance of Student Teaching. Observing the impact of professional dispositions, teacher expectations, and classroom climate on effective teaching and learning is a foundational component of each of the three EFE courses as well.
EFE courses are designed to increase teacher candidate classroom responsibilities incrementally, beginning with observational tasks, and progressing to instructional delivery of full lessons and multi-week units. The primary focus of the third EFE course is preparation for the final clinical experience.
The Foreign Language Teacher Education program culminates with Student Teaching. The practicum takes place during the last semester of the program and runs across the entire semester, ending immediately prior to spring commencement.
